This is a researched guide to 37 drinks with a story and a meaningful place you can still visit. It is not a ranking, and we have not drunk our way through all 37 ourselves.
Cocktail history is messy. Bars close, stories improve with retelling, and several famous drinks have more than one person claiming the shaker. For a guide like this, we would rather write “the bar claims” once too often than turn a good story into a fact.
Some historic addresses carry more than one drink. When that happens, one pin opens the drinks tied to that bar.
We have researched the guide as carefully as possible, but ownership changes. If something has changed, tell us.
Not on the map. It belongs in cocktail history, but we could not find a surviving birthplace we trust enough to pin. The earliest documented use of the name we found is Ankara in 1943 among American airmen, not the much-repeated story about oil workers stirring vodka and orange juice with a screwdriver. This guide needs a door you can still walk through.
