Brett Graham’s restaurant, The Ledbury in Notting Hill has just received 3 Michelin stars after 13 years of holding 2 stars. London now boasts six 3-star Michelin restaurants (in comparison, Paris has 9). Worldwide, there are 144.
So, it’s no wonder my wife instantly made a reservation hours after the announcement and secured a table. Best wife ever! (The title ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!’ is a playful cheer, celebrating Brett’s Australian spirit in the culinary arena.)
The Ledbury doesn’t mess around with kitchen tables or tours of the kitchen, which nowadays seem almost obligatory for any three-star restaurant. They even allow you to BYO (bring your own bottle), quite a surprise for a 3-star Michelin establishment, but they do charge a hefty corkage fee.
But that’s hardly necessary, given their excellent and intriguing wine list. Still, I regret missing out on the Pinot Noir from Domaine Takahiko Soga, Japan. We chose the wine pairing, and it was superbly matched with our meals. Which is not always a given, even in Michelin-starred restaurants.
The ambiance in the restaurant is relaxed and cosy, with chef Brett Graham motoring around the restaurant and keeping everyone happy. The restroom is at the bottom of the staircase, near their unique mushroom cabinet, which sparked thoughts of the TV series The Last of Us.
