Review: Pigalle

Hotel Pigalle - ”This May Be the World’s Most Decadent Hotel Suite”

The title is not ours; it is from a review in March 2017 in Vogue when the Suite had just opened. Our first visit was in August 2017. We almost agreed with the Vogue review, but not entirely. It was decadent, and the wines in the room were exceptional. The only downside at the time was the insufficient air conditioning that didn’t reach the bedroom. To be picky, the noise from the tram outside the window could be heard throughout the night. The bathroom is very small, and we’re not fans of shower curtains in hotels. Nonetheless, the suite was stunning.

Fast forward six years, and the suite remains in exactly same state as in 2017. Nothing has changed, except maybe they replaced the Marshall speaker. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill since our first visit. No bartender is showing up to mix you a drink in the room.

The crystal glasses in the room need cleaning. There are suspicious white/grey stains on the velvet sofa, and there are many of them… The champagne fridge is decimated, as are the options for red and white wines. However, there are still some good ones to choose from. All in all, there is no wow factor left.

Calling in-room dining is like dealing with the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld on the other end. They don’t have anything else except what’s on the Bistro Atelier menu. The menu consists of one meat, one fish, and one vegan dish, along with some starters. As for the kids’ menu? Pasta Bolognese, Chicken Nuggets, Burgers? No, no, and NO!  Everything tasted premade, just heated and put on a plate. The sirloin steak was chewy and inedible, accompanied by cold, extracted sauce, and so on. McDonald’s is a better choice and not far away.

To get in touch with the reception, restaurant, etc., you have to call mobile phone numbers, and if you’re lucky, someone will answer. The staff is super friendly and means well but misses things like when we ask them to take away the in-room dining so that the room doesn’t smells food when we come back at midnight, and we also informed them that we removed the smelly lilies, from our room and placed outside the door.

Hotel Pigalle in Gothenburg

Conclusion

Pigalle is decadent, but not in a good way anymore. The tacky voice in the elevator, announcing us a ‘bon voyage’—the only thing we could hear in our heads was au revoir, nous ne reviendrons pas.
