Review: Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Our Stay at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Our stay at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was a bit like a love affair gone wrong – initially charmed by the beautiful and tranquil setting, but soon discovering that looks can be deceiving. The service was about as warm as a cold spaghetti carbonara, leaving us feeling unwelcome and unsupported throughout our stay.

We even had a Fawlty Towers moment when we wanted to leave some feedback at check-out, with the receptionist channeling Manuel’s famous catchphrase, “I know nothing.”

Dining Experiences

Osteria La Canonica

We did have an amazing Fiorentina T-Bone Steak at Osteria La Canonica. However, the same couldn’t be said for the Ornellaia wine, which was treated like a cheap plonk from the bargain bin.

Restaurant Campo del Drago

Our visit to a one-star Michelin restaurant Campo del Drago, we remain unimpressed. The experience was underwhelming and did not even live up to the standards we expected, even falling short of what would qualify for a BiB Gourmand in Scandinavia.

The dishes, while aesthetically pleasing on the plate, were only average in taste. However, the most disappointing aspect of our visit was the overall service, particularly regarding a miscommunication over a bottle of wine that left us feeling betrayed—much like discovering Santa wasn’t real.

Here’s what happened: I specifically pointed to a bottle from Castello di Ama in the wine book. Instead, the sommelier brought another bottle from the produce, their top wine, a much more expensive option, which I didn’t realize until the bill arrived. It felt like being ripped off by a taxi for a short trip around the corner.

The sommelier admitted his fault and promised to reduce it from the bill. Did it happen? At the check-out, the bill still included the expensive wine. And once more, “I know nothing.” from the front desk. So, we had to suck it up and pay another 200 euros+.

Hotel Experience

We loved our ‘corner’ at the hotel, but the surveillance camera outside our room left us puzzled. Sometimes it was green, sometimes red and even red and green together. Not a clue what it meant. Who was watching?

The air conditioning was not sufficient; be prepared for a warm room. You could always open a window, but there’s a reason the surveillance camera is there.

For the first time, the cleaning staff locked us out of our room when we were in the garden. The reception is not close by, so it was an ouch, ouch barefoot and hot walk to get there.

Our ‘corner’ at the hotel.” Big Brother style.

Conclusion

All in all, our stay was a lesson in why you should never rely on online reviews or influencers to judge a hotel. We would encourage the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco to step up their game and give their guests the care and attention they deserve – after all, love may be blind, but hotel guests certainly aren’t.
