Review: The Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco

A club level that is worth the upgrade.

The Ritz-Carlton is one of the most iconic hotels in San Francisco. Sure, the hotel is in need of refurbishment in the rooms. And like the rest of the hotels in California at which we stayed, some of the service is post-COVID. It’s hard to rehire staff who have service running in their blood and know the ropes, but the Ritz-Carlton can still deliver good service.

The doormen are excellent and the Club Level, where they excel in warm hospitality. Everyone who has met Rudy Haryono, the Club Level Concierge, could sign on to that. We rarely mention staff names, but this time we make an exception for his devotion to meeting every guest with joy and commitment to providing excellent customer service.

If we had stayed in a regular double room and had breakfast every morning at Parallel 37, this little review would probably go the other way around. Six nights at one hotel is quite long for us, and you normally see the “cracks” after three days. However, we felt comfortable all the days.

There are a couple of hotel choices in San Francisco. Another classic hotel is the Fairmont. The rental car company Sixt has its office in their lobby, and we did a little walk around when picking up the rental car. It felt like a retirement home. Just saying…

JCB Tasting Lounge

This was a fun experience. The tasting room is at lobby level, and we walked by it a couple of times. We thought that you had to book a tasting and that they didn’t take walk-ins. But one day, we stepped in and were greeted with a big smile from the lady behind the desk.

We had a great tasting and talked a lot about WSET education as she had an exam two days later, so we gave her some last-minute tips. The room is super kitschy, and the wine we tasted wasn’t bad. In fact, it was quite good!
