Scandinavian Retreat: Dragsholm Slot Hotel

Dragsholm Slot Hotel

Located just over an hour from Copenhagen, Dragsholm Slot Hotel offers a cozy retreat in the Danish countryside with charming, almost perfect rooms.

We had lunch at the bistro when we arrived. It’s located in the castle, one stair up; the gourmet restaurant and the bar are downstairs in the cellar. Cozy, with good honest food and excellent wine by the glass, as is often the case in Denmark. It seems that Sweden goes for high markups when serving wines by the glass, while Denmark focuses more on quality. Maybe we are wrong, but that’s our impression.

The only downside of the bistro is the location of its kitchen, which is in the middle of the restaurant. The kitchen fan is not sufficient, making our clothes smell of fried fish. Otherwise, it was a good lunch.

The room was inviting and nearly perfect. However, they could benefit from a bit more decoration to make them feel more homely. Adding some plants and design elements would significantly enhance the atmosphere. The bathroom is well-appointed with two sinks, but it is puzzling why only one soap dispenser is installed above one sink, which seems impractical. Again, some greenery would improve the space; it feels as though the final touches were overlooked.

On a positive note, the in-room safe is securely attached to the cabinet. This is a notable detail, as it is often the case that safes are loosely placed, making them easy to remove.

Honestly, it’s almost tempting to take one under your arm. If people can take bathrobes, why not? Kidding—the only theft we do is take a hotel pen as a souvenir, but we ask first, sometimes 😉

When arriving at the hotel, avoid the first parking area. Drive a bit further to find a larger parking closer to the reception. The reception is conveniently located in the same house as the café where breakfast is served.

Speaking of breakfast, it is quite good, although it is a fixed menu similar to that at the Vyn Hotel. It is best not to request any changes to the menu, as it is served without any modifications. Enjoy it for what it is—a solid start to your day in this charming Scandinavian hideaway. Last tip: choose a table in the adjoining room, known as the stable. It is cooler, offers more privacy, and there is a small wine shop with a good selection of wines. The bottles are marked with two prices: one for taking away and one for drinking on-site.
