The Craigellachie Hotel in the Scottish Highlands

Classic Highland Hotel Since 1893.

The Craigellachie Hotel, located in the picturesque village of Craigellachie in Speyside, Scotland, is renowned for its historical charm and offers easy access to numerous distilleries, including Macallan, Glenfarclas, and Glenfiddich, and many more, all within a short drive.

That is why you stay here. It is the best hotel around. Do not forget that some distilleries require a reservation in advance, especially Macallan, where you cannot get in without one. We did not book anything at Glenfiddich but visited the impressive gift shop and had lunch in their restaurant, where you can choose from different whisky tastings from the menu.

The hotel was built in 1893, originally as “The Craigellachie Railway Hotel”, intended to cater to travelers visiting Speyside via the Speyside Railway. Today, it retains much of its Victorian charm. The hotel has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Hotel lounge

Our room was spacious and had the most comfortable bed of our Scotland journey. The bed could easily compete with the Four Seasons Hotel’s comfy beds. The hotel is decent, fine for one or two nights, but not more.

The hotel has 26 rooms, and some overlook the River Spey. It is an old hotel, so be prepared to hear other guests. We had dinner at The Spey Inn, which is in the basement where the pub is. They also have a bar next to the lobby, The Quaich Bar, a legendary whiskey bar where many celebraties, had a glass or two. Sláinte!

All set for dinner.

Who can resist a Sticky Toffe Puding? And this was excellent!

Conclusion

The Craigellachie Hotel, with its rich history and convenient location, is a charming spot for a short stay in Speyside. While the hotel has a cozy atmosphere and offers a good restaurant and bar, some areas show signs of wear and could use a bit of TLC. Think of it more as an excellent B&B or a 3-star hotel. For a couples of nights, especially if you’re exploring local distilleries, it’s the best option around. Just remember to book your distillery tours in advance!
